What is the Baubie Sunshine Goodie Boutique?

Baubie Sunshine Goodie Boutique was set up by me, Natalie McGlynn in 2010. I wanted to create a little online factory which sold loads of my creations. All the goodies for sale in the emporium usually start with a photograph in some way, shape or form and then slowly become something altogether new and different. I hope to use my images on as many goodies as possible so stay tuned...

Who is Baubie Sunshine?

Baubie Sunshine is a character I created. I had a dream one night and in it I was handed a birth certificate with her name spelled clearly on it. I woke up thinking that it was the maddest name I'd ever heard but I really liked it! So, I immediately went to work designing what I thought she might look like and that’s who I came up with!

What is your background?

For as far back as I can remember I have always loved to design and make all kinds of different things. I wasn't really that great at painting or drawing and it didn't interest me enough to learn. So the day I layed my fingers on a computer I knew that was the way I was going to fuel my enormous desire to design! I went to college and learned graphic design and loved it. After working for a few years as a graphic designer I got really bored sitting in an office making leaflets and brochures. Meanwhile I was creating pictures with fabulous photographer Lynn Rawcliffe in my other venture Ruby & Pin. So when that came to an end I knew I wanted to give it a try on my own and open a little online factory. The rest is history my friend...

Do you have a mannequin facsination?

I absolutely LOVE mannequins and I really am fascinated by them. I don’t think they are creepy, I thnk they are so beautiful and so photogenic. They have such an edgy look that totally inspires me!

What else inspires you?

Music is my biggest inspiration. It seldom fails to inspire me. I'm a big 60's music fan, some of my favourites being The Beatles, Van Morrison, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, The Beach boys, oh the list goes on and on! I am also a big fan of children's books, I collect them (I think they are such beautiful little works of art in their own right). Some of my favourite authors/illustrators are Dr Suess, Yoshitomo Nara, Edward Gorey and Oliver Jeffers. People who do what they love in life really inspire me too. I know there’s more I just can’t think right now...

Do you also write & Illustrate books?

YES! I am so excited to have my very first Picture Book printed. I co-wrote the story of Cranium Kid (the boy of the head) with the fabulous Dave Byrne. Dave is 1/3 of Dublin band, The Aluskas. His song writing skills came in very handy when coming up with our rhyming story. I used my traditional photo-collage illustrations with a mix of vector art. We have independently published this book through Zebra In A Top Hat Press. There's another in the pipeline...

Tell us about the Indie movement.

I am so very passionate about Indie and am vigorously involved in the Independent movement. It is the perfect time to go it alone and it's never been easier to get your work out there with the help of social media. Why wait for approval from someone else when you can go out there and get it for yourself!
